Golf Cart Battery Cleaning

Along with the aesthetic considerations of cleaning your golf cart, you must also keep up with battery cleaning. As any seasoned golf cart owner knows, batteries are like a magnet for all sorts of dust, grime, and dirt. Keeping them clean can not only extend their life, but it can help you spot potential troubles with the battery and catch them early rather than letting them hide under a film of filth. When cleaning your battery, there are several steps to take that can help you do a thorough yet fast job.

  1. As with watering your golf cart battery, be sure that all vent caps are securely tightened before cleaning.
  2. Using a mixture of water and baking soda at a ratio of .12 cups of baking soda per quart of water, use a cloth or brush to clean the top of the battery. Be careful to keep any of the mixture or other materials out of the battery, as this can result in serious damage.
  3. Rinse the battery top with water and dry with a new, clean cloth.
  4. Remove the battery clamps and clean the terminals inside the clamps with a post and clamp cleaner. When they have a clear metallic luster, you know they are clean.
  5. Once you have cleaned the terminals, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or anti-corrosion battery spray gel from a battery care kit to the golf cart battery clamps, which will help prevent corrosion, and reconnect them.
  6. Do NOT wash switches, electronic controllers, solenoid or other electrical devises with a hose! If necessary, cover them with a waterproof material to keep them safe and dry.

Along with these steps, be sure to make an active effort to keep your battery clean and dry throughout its life. For more information on cleaning golf cart batteries, and for a battery care kit, call or e-mail Fairway Golf Carts today.
